"The Pantheon of the Gods"

Father Arthus - Creator and ruler of Mirus Parvulus. Said to be the brightest star in the night sky.

Findla - Wife of Father Arthus. Watches over women and children.

Dethos & Linthos - Gods of creation and destruction, respectively.

Maranne - Goddess of nature. Mother of Dethos and Linthos.

Elthor - God of war. Father of Dethos and Linthos.

Lorelle - Goddess of love and beauty.

Haril - God of scholars and knowledge. His influence has brought about Mirus Parvulus' cultural renaissance.

Neralta - Goddess of life and death. Was once human.

Altael - God of change.

"The Creation of Mirus Parvulus"

In the beginning there were only thoughts. Fragments of emotions and ideas. Drifting about the endless corridors of nothingness, these thoughts knew only the absolute emptiness that was their existance. These thoughts began to intermingle with each other, forming more complex ideas and experiencing more intense feelings. More and more of them intertwined and they grew as a whole, becoming bigger and bigger until finally there were no more independent thoughts left. Together they formed a consciousness which humans would later call a God. Father Arthan, to be exact.

Father Arthan soon grew weary of his new life and desired a companion. Thinking on how best to create another entity, he decided that "compassion" was the least useful of all his newly gathered qualities. Extracting a piece of "compassion" from his very being, Father Arthan created the first new life in this vast nothingness. "Compassion" had taken on a new form. This form he called "woman." Humans would later know her as Findla.

Father Arthan, along with the woman, soon became restless. Bored with all the nothingness they saw before them, the two decided to create a place where they would house other beings like themselves. Using the thoughts and emotions from within them, they crafted a masterpiece. A world in which to place whatever they wished. They called this world "Mirus Parvulus." Their wonderful child. Before long their child was filled with new and beautiful creations - forests made of trees, seas from droplets, and mountains out of stone.

Realizing they needed someone to care for their new creations, Father Arthan and Findla extracted Maranne from themselves. Gentle yet wild, hardy yet frail, Maranne saw to the proper balance of nature in the world. Later, feeling threatened by the vast amounts of negative emotions he contained, Father Arthan did away with them. With the collection of emotion he created Elthor. It wouldn't be until much later that the Gods would understand his true purpose - when they would witness the power of war rage over their beautiful Mirus Parvulus.

Maranne and Elthor soon created two new beings between the two of them. They called them Dethos and Linthos - creation and destruction, respectively. Seeing what the others had made, Father Arthan and Findla saw that it was good, and set out to fill their new world with lesser beings for them to watch over. Ther "children" as they would later call them. Thus, Mirus Parvulus was home to the most complex creatures yet...humans. Lorelle and Haril were created to aid and guide the humans with unseen hands.

Then, one day something extraordinary happened. Something the Gods did not expect. Looking down on their earth, they watched a young woman named Neralta as she herself gave life to another human being. The Gods watched in awe as a tiny, flawed life was born from her flesh. Soon thereafter, Neralta's body stopped moving. She was the first human to give life. And the first to die. Findla and Lorelle wept inconsolably, sending harsh rains down upon the earth. To appease them, Father Arthan captured Neralta's essence and carried it up into the heavens. There, he granted her eternal life as the newest divine; Goddess of life and death.

The Gods saw that their new world and everything they had placed in it was perfect. They reveled in the beauty of it all and they swore that it would never change. Father Arthan, in an attempt to preserve all he had done, extracted "change" from his being and sought to seal it away forever, so that Mirus Parvulus might enjoy an eternity of happiness and prosperity. The essense of thoughts and emotions he had removed proved to be too unstable to handle. The entities swirled around each other until they combined into a new being - the last of the Gods. He called himself Altael, the God of change. He is always watching Mirus Parvulus, altering life on the planet by his fickle whims. Humans have come to accept him. Some even embrace and worship him, while others denounce him and live in fear of the God. Whether for good or for bad, Altael's influence on Mirus Parvulus is always evident.

Colorado kids lag on health indicators | EdNewsColorado

More than a third of Colorado kids don't get enough exercise and 14 percent are obese.

Colorado continues to fall behind other states on important indicators of physical health and children here are faring the worst, according to a new report released today by the Colorado Health Foundation.

Colorado has an adult obesity rate of 22 percent, making it the leanest state in a nation where more than one third of adults are obese. But the adult obesity rate is rising faster here than in other states and Colorado is no longer the only state in the nation with an obesity rate lower than 20 percent.

One reason is the state?s rapidly increasing childhood obesity rate, which ranks it 23rd among all states ? up from a third-place ranking just a few years ago.

More than 14 percent of all Colorado children are now obese and a third of children here don?t get enough exercise, defined as physical activity that makes them sweat and breathe hard for 20 minutes four days a week.

Income and ethnicity play a role in those statistics, with Hispanic children three times more likely to be obese than white children and poorer children less likely to exercise than their more affluent peers.

Among other child-related highlights of the 2011 Colorado Health Report Card:

  • Poverty: The number of children not covered by public or private health insurance dropped from 12 percent to 9 percent last year, putting Colorado 36th in the nation, up from 44th. But this news is bittersweet, because the increase can be attributed to the increasing number of children now living in poverty and thus eligible for coverage under Medicaid or the Child Health Plan Plus. The poverty rate for Coloradans age 12 and younger rose from 16 percent to 18 percent last year, 20th place among the states.
  • Healthy habits: Colorado tops the nation in the number of adolescents who eat five or more servings per day of fruits and vegetables, 24 percent, and in the number of adolescents who have been sexually active in the past three months, 27 percent.
  • Vaccination: Immunization rates are up, with 71 percent of preschool children receiving all the recommended doses of five key vaccines. But what?s especially concerning to health officials is the number of parents who purposely choose not to vaccinate their children. A survey last year showed Colorado with the nation?s second-highest rate of vaccine refusal. ?We anticipate that will change based on dispelling misinformation around autism,? said Michelle Lueck, president of the Colorado Health Institute, which partnered in the report.

?We would hire a tutor if these were our kids? grades?

The annual health report card, now in its fifth year, tracks 38 health indicators spanning the five life stages from prenatal care to aging. While some health indicators have improved, the state?s overall grades haven?t changed much over the years.

?The grades are middle of the pack,? said Lueck. ?We would hire a tutor if these were our kids? grades.?

There?s no bell curve in the grade process. An ?A? equates to being in the top 10 states, a ?B? for being in 11th through 20th position, a ?C? for ranking 21 through 30, and so on. In other words, No. 1 is best and no. 50 is worst.

Colorado?s lowest rank is for the number of low birth-weight babies, those born weighing less than 5 pounds, 9 ounces. At nearly 9 percent of babies born, that puts Colorado at 39th among the states.

It is 38th in dental care for children, with just 77 percent of youngsters having seen a dentist for preventive care in the past year. And it is 37th in the rate of adolescent binge drinking, with 25 percent having downed five or more alcoholic drinks in a row within the past month.

The state also fares well in some indicators.

In addition to rates of adult obesity, adolescent sexual activity and adolescent fruit and vegetable consumption, Colorado also leads the nation in the number of older adults getting flu shots, at 59 percent.

The state also has the second-lowest number of adults with high blood pressure, at 17 percent, and the third-lowest number of adults with diabetes, 4.5 percent.

Most other grades fall somewhere in the middle.

Report also highlights prevention efforts

In a supplement to the report card, the Colorado Health Foundation highlights some evidence-based preventive programs that are yielding impressive returns on investment.

For example, the Cavity Free at Three program, established in 2006, has provided more than 15,000 babies and toddlers from low-income Colorado families with dental services.

A study published in Pediatrics found that average dental expenses for children who see a dentist or dental hygienist by their first birthday were $262 over five years, while those who didn?t get their first oral health checkup until they were 4 or 5 racked up an average of $546 in dental bills.

?I didn?t realize just how important oral health is, but it?s a gateway to the health care delivery system,? Lueck said. ?An untreated cavity can become an abcessed tooth and that becomes an infection.?

She put the number of school hours lost by Colorado students every year because of cavities at 8 million.

Likewise, vaccinations pay for themselves very quickly. To get a baby fully immunized requires seven visits to a pediatrician. But for every dollar invested in vaccines, families save an estimated $5 in health care costs later plus $11 in indirect costs, such as lost productivity from parents taking time off from work to care for a sick child.

?There?s a strong case to be made for return on investment,? said Chuck Reymann, vice president of communication for the Colorado Health Foundation. ?We sometimes short-shrift preventive health care.?

Examples of other ?promising initiatives? highlighted in the report include:

  • Children?s Corridor ? The Piton Foundation has identified a 41 square-mile strip of land across northeast Denver and into Aurora that is home to many of the most at-risk children in the Denver metro area. Modeled after the Harlem Children?s Zone in New York City, the Piton Foundation is partnering with neighborhood groups, nonprofits, child-care centers, schools and other foundations to create a coordinated community effort that will help a new generation of children.
  • The Promise Center ? The Foundation for Educational Excellence, with the assistance of other philanthropic organizations, is constructing The Promise Center. This will be a community center built on the Denver Public Schools? Dr. Evie Dennis Campus to serve far northeast Denver neighborhoods, where as many as 20 percent of children live in poverty. This $15 million facility will house a variety of services available to children and their families, including early childhood education and after-school programming.
  • Colorado Prevention Partnership for Success ? CPPS aims to reduce substance abuse among Hispanic teens in Adams, Denver, Pueblo and Weld counties. Colorado received a $2.3 million grant in 2010 from the federal Center for Substance Abuse Prevention to improve prevention services for Hispanic youth, a population increasingly at risk for substance abuse and binge drinking. Using culturally specific services and policies, CPPS seeks to reduce binge drinking among Hispanic high school youth 5 percent after three years and 8 percent after five years.

UN adopts resolution on Sri Lanka war crimes probe

The UN Human Rights Council passed a resolution Thursday urging Sri Lanka to "credibly investigate" allegations of war crimes during its battle against Tamil Tiger separatists in 2009.

Unlike in the immediate aftermath of the conflict when it staved off a similar move at the Human Rights Council, Colombo was unable this time to lobby sufficient support to defeat the Western-led move, with even its ally India voting in favour.

Tabling the resolution, the United States said Colombo had been given three years to hold its own investigations into allegations of serious violations, but "given the lack of action... it is appropriate" that the 47-member state council pushed it to do so.

"An enduring peace will be unsustainable without meaningful steps to foster national reconciliation and accountability," said US envoy Eileen Donahoe.

"It is a resolution that encourages Sri Lanka to ... make concerted efforts at achieving the kind of meaningful accountability upon which lasting reconciliation efforts can be built."

The US envoy also noted that India's backing was "very helpful because they are such a close neighbour".

"We see India's support as nothing but positive."

Rights groups say up to 40,000 civilians died in the final months of Colombo's military campaign to crush the Tamil Tigers, who waged a bloody decades-long campaign for a separate homeland for minority Tamils.

The UN estimates some 100,000 people died during Sri Lanka's ethnic conflict between 1972 and 2009.

Sri Lankan authorities however angrily rejected the resolution, with ruling party MPs even rallying outside parliament in Colombo while the bill was being considered in Geneva.

Sri Lanka's human rights envoy Mahinda Samarasinghe told the council it was a "misconceived, unwarranted and ill-timed resolution which embodies several harmful elements that clearly violate important principles that will have adverse ramifications, not only for my country, but many other countries."

He insisted that Sri Lanka must be given time to allow its domestic investigations to run its course, and warned that the resolution would be counter-productive.

It would "also undermine the principle of non-interference in matters within the domestic jurisdiction of a country," he added, a point backed by China and Russia, both of which rejected the resolution.

Some activists also complained of "intimidation" tactics by Colombo-backed elements, with people who appeared to be with the Sri Lanka delegation going around photographing certain members of NGOs.

"It was done in a very obvious manner and we felt uncomfortable," an activist told AFP on condition of anonymity, adding that the team "contemplated leaving the session".

The group brought a complaint to the presidency of the UN Human Rights Council, and later decided to stay as an investigation was launched into the matter.

The complaints and investigation was confirmed by a UN rights spokesman who however said he could not give further details.

The issue was also raised during Thursday's session by the European Union, which called on Sri Lankan authorities to "respect and protect" the rights of individuals and civil society members.

University Makes 80,000 Einstein Documents Publicly Available

I'm starting to form an alternative theory about why Einstein gets more tail than you do.

Ah so you're one of those "nice guys" who can't be honest about what he sees.
