It was a great day for the people that got to go to hear Paul Ryan. I have never been to The Villages. They are a very important part of the political world when it comes to getting their vote.

Candi's Baby Shower - A Memory Book, Diaper Cake and Fun!

How's everybody doing? Fine I hope! It's been super busy around here. Seems like I'm always saying that, but it's true! lol I have a long post and lots of pictures to share so I'm going to jump right into it.

My daughter (Tara), my granddaughter (Jordan) and I have been extremely busy getting ready for a baby shower for one of Tara's BFFs. These two have known each other and hung around together since they were about 11 years old, quite a long time. So Candi is like a member of our family and Tara was very honored to host a baby shower for her. Of course Tara's first call was to momma..... "Can you help?" and of course I jumped in with a loud YES! So we set on our journey and started planning.

Candi wanted it to be primarily for family and really close friends and it was to be a boy/girl party. I must admit, I know that's the thing now, but I'm old school so it was a new experience for me. We planned a cookout with plenty of food, cupcakes for dessert and present opening as the main events for the party. Candi's step-mom wanted to have some shower games so she took charge of those events. So with everything scoped out, we got our creative juices flowing and here's what we came up with.

I love creating memory books. They seem to be so much easier for me to put together than a card. Seems odd to me but it takes me forever to design a card and then I'm always a little disappointed because it never looks as good as what it did in my imagination. lol But I keep trying. Anyway, I've created several memory books and I always enjoy the process. This time though I decided I'd try and make it into a real book, so I started off with some research on how I could bind it all together. And to my surprise, I quickly found a fantastic tutorial on this subject. It was clear and easy follow and only used supplies that I currently had on hand. Woohoo! I didn't have to purchase anything! I was very pleased with the results. But more about that later.

Once I verified that I could make my own book, I started creating the individual pages that I would include. I wanted to create something that would allow Candi to show off the special holiday pictures of the baby in a fun way. So I wanted each page to revolve around a picture. I used images from my Vintage Greeting Card collection as temporary place holders in the picture frames. These will be replaced by actual pictures of the baby as the year goes on. I also planned on including a little journal tag behind each image.

I used 12x12 pastel card stock and cut each one in half which gave me two sheets of 6x12 which I folded in half. This gave me two pages of 6x6 paper. I planned on only decorating the inside of the folded sheet and left the outside of the sheets blank. Now, all I had to do was decorate it and here's the results.

The Mommy and Me page was the last page that I created and I had pretty much used up all the good pastel color sheets, so I'm not too fond of the colors used. But didn't want to run to the store... lol

Now all I had to do was bind them all together. Remember back a ways I told you I left the outside of the 6x6 sheets blank. I knew I was going to use different colors of the pastel card stock so I didn't really want to decorate a page that was say half blue and half green so my intention was to attach the outside sheets together. I was a little worried about the thickness of the decorated pages. So as I had them all stacked together and was analyzing them I decided I would only attach the front edges of the back sides of the sheet to each other. That way the back side or folded edge was a little freer to move. Hopefully that makes sense. So I used lots of sticky tape on about half of outside sheet (non-folded edge) on one of the undecorated sides and carefully attached it to next page in the book. This worked like a charm. Each page was now doubly thick and sturdy but the folded edge was free. I didn't remember to take pictures during this process so if this doesn't make any sense just let me know and I'll recreate what I did and snap a few pics to help you out.

Now, it was time to make my book cover. Like I said earlier, I found this fantastic tutorial that walked me through the process. You can check it out by clicking here. It was really easy to do and I was very pleased with the outcome.

A couple of things to be aware of... I was too slow with attaching the binding to the back of the pages so my hot glue cooled enough that I had to add more. So I think the next time, I will only do about half of the length at a time and then attach it to the binding vs. the whole length. Also, I used a cotton based material as my cover so by the time I had the whole thing covered in glue, it was seeping through to the table, so be sure and do this process on something that won't be harmed by some white glue. lol And one other word of caution, I was a little disappointed in how the cotton fabric looked after it was attached. There was some dark and light splotches all over it. My guess is that this is caused by the amount of glue that was used and the fact that it wasn't evenly spread across the fabric. The decorations that I put on the outside of the book masked this problem a little bit, but I think I might try a different type of fabric the next time. All in all, for a first time project I was very pleased with the results.

Here's Candi and Rudy checking out their memory book.

Tara decided she wanted to create a diaper cake for Candi. So once again, an Internet search yielded all the information we needed to complete our design. We checked out several sites and combined different techniques together but you can click here to view a tutorial on creating your own diaper cake. Tara gathered together the supplies, 2 bags of newborn Pampers, some ribbon, some rubber bands and plenty of little things for decoration. Then Tara, Jordan and I got busy and created our "cake". My primary job was rolling diapers and creating the bow both of which look pretty good (teehee). It was simple to do and it only took us about 2 hours. Here's Jordan with our finished project.
The last thing we had to do was bake and decorate cup cakes. We created some little cup cake toppers using guess what? - Why Vintage Baby Images of course! I set up some little 3" round images and we used a scallop die cut. We then used the same scallop die cut out some pretty card stock for the back. Jordan glued them all together - her first time using hot glue. I only heard a couple ouches.. lol .
And our finished cup cakes.....
For games, Candi's step mom had the guys create babies using play dough then Candi and Rudy had to judge which one was the best. This was a really cute idea and I was surprised at how creative the guys were. I didn't get any pictures of their babies, but everyone really enjoyed this game. She had a play "How much toliet paper does it take to go around Candi's belly". It was really fun watching the guys try and figure this out. Some were really nice and some not so nice. lol

So that's it folks, everyone had a great time and I can't wait for the baby to arrive!

Have a great week, plumb full of smiles!
Peggy

Shaping the world of 2050 |

Sometime ago, I attended the Junior World Entrepreneurial Forum Pakistan ? Conference jointly hosted by World Entrepreneurship Forum, France and Lahore School of Economics, Pakistan. The Conference was aimed ?to create awareness about the world in 2050 and also to develop thinking and generating ideas through an entrepreneurial mind.?

The World Entrepreneurship Forum (WEF) is a global think tank of entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs, experts and politicians, chosen for their entrepreneurial achievements and their commitment to society. Presently, 110 members of 55 countries (including Syed Babar Ali and Iqbal M Khan from Pakistan) are active in the World Entrepreneurship Forum. The think tank is working for a more entrepreneurial world, creating wealth and social justice through four key levers ? Creating Innovative and High-Growth Companies to create millions of jobs around the planet. Disseminating Entrepreneurship at the ?Base of the Pyramid? to alleviate poverty and create new markets. Shaping Entrepreneurial Cities, being tomorrow?s centers for innovation and Implementing Entrepreneurial Education to disseminate entrepreneurial mindset, skills and competencies throughout society, on a permanent basis.

The Junior World Entrepreneurship Forum (JWEF) ? students? version of the WEF ? brings together hundreds of students from different countries for events lasting four days. The objective of the JWEF is to empower the younger generation of students with entrepreneurial skills for the future. Currently they are 10 chapters of the junior league in the world, with Pakistan being one of the countries.

This year Pakistan hosted its inaugural Junior Forum Conference 2011 at Lahore School of Economics (July 27-30, 2011) that was attended by large number of young scholars from UET, LUMS, UCP, Punjab University, FAST, NUST, IM Sciences, and Lahore School of Economics.

There was a lot of meaningful talk and information was presented based on research with relevance to local context. On the sidelines of the Conference 2011, I rounded up some entrepreneurship experts ( from Asad Umar (Engro), Khalid Mansoor (Engro), Moonis Rehman (Rozee.com), Saleem M. Rafik (Nadra), Shehla Akram (WCCI), Arif Masud Mirza (ACCA), Kamil Khan Mumtaz (Architect), Amjad Saqib (Akhuwat), Hassan Sohaib Murad (UMT), Zubyr Soomro (Ex-CEO Citi Bank), Salim Shauri (NetSol), Saquib Mohyuddin (BSF), Nayyar Ali Dada, Ambareen Waheed, and Iqbal M. Khan) and culled their insights on the lack of entrepreneurship education in Pakistan. All said that entrepreneurship education is the only way to prepare for year 2050 and beyond.

Entrepreneurship is a set of skills and attitudes, ranging from the ability to think in multidimensional ways to the ability of making out new opportunities and putting ideas into practice that results in high growth rates, new chances and more benefits to all segments of society including the poor. It requires an application of energy and passion towards the creation and implementation of new ideas and creative solutions. Essential factors include the willingness to take calculated risks in terms of time, equity and career; the ability to formulate an effective venture team; the creative skills to organize needed resources, and fundamental skills of building solid business plan and finally the vision to recognize opportunity where others see chaos, contradiction, and confusion. It is more than the mere creation of business. But can these traits be taught in the class?

In the past two decades, there has been debates over question like is business enterprise in your genes or can it be taught in the business schools? Many argued that success depends on temperament. Some said entrepreneurship is about having acumen that business schools cannot teach. Some other said the passion for business is not something you can learn in a classroom.

Notwithstanding myths, ?this issue has been settled now and everyone believes that entrepreneurship education is a must,? says Senor Entrepreneurship Fellow Iqbal M Khan. A research study says, ?five years after graduation, the average annual income for entrepreneurship majors and MBAs who concentrated in entrepreneurship at the school was almost 27 percent higher than for other business majors and students with standard MBAs. Moreover, entrepreneurship graduates were three times more likely to form new companies. Even those entrepreneurship graduates who took jobs within large companies earned bigger paychecks.? Another research on the subject shows that ?the more entrepreneurial classes taught at the MBA level, the more likely students are to become entrepreneurs.?

In Pakistan, many business schools (including Lahore School, LUMS, GC University and IBA) are already teaching entrepreneurship. Need is that entrepreneurship education is brought into mainstream. Business schools can best provide platforms for entrepreneurial activities; a strong focus on entrepreneurship education will certainly spill over to non-business students and help promote an entrepreneurial spirit. Viewing business schools as mediators of skills, entrepreneurship students pursuing an entrepreneurial career are equipped with a set of skills that will help them identify new business ideas and provide them with a practical approach to entrepreneurship. ?By putting students in an environment of entrepreneurialism, you can encourage them to try becoming an entrepreneur,? says Professor Iqbal M Khan.

Entrepreneurship education can inculcate willingness to take calculated risks in terms of time, equity and career; the ability to formulate an effective venture team; the creative skills to organize needed resources, and fundamental skills of building solid business plan and finally the vision to recognize opportunity. The students can develop entrepreneurial perspective that they can exhibit in their careers.

Traditionally, entrepreneurship perspective has always flourished in Pakistan despite the intrusive role of governments in the marketplace, political instability, and continuing wave of terrorism, lack of infrastructure and more so lack of academic and research support. Entrepreneurship cities of Sialkot, Gujranwala and Gujrat are very good examples to cite. Effective entrepreneurship education can take this already present spirit to next level.

Pakistan requires a dynamic approach towards entrepreneurial education, to ensure socio-economic growth. If Pakistan (also other courtiers) has to meet the challenges set by the WEF, entrepreneurship education must be given more importance. The need of the hour is to adopt and utilize entrepreneurship in current education system and bring it into the mainstream. Only then, we can hope to see entrepreneurial spirit, which would grow individual entrepreneurs at all levels by year 2050 and beyond.

How to Deal With Debt When Retired | 50 Plus Finance

It is ideal to pay off all debts before retiring. But at times, it is inevitable. You may have entered your retirement age but you still keep several outstanding debts that you have to deal with after you retired from employment. Getting retired does not mean you are spared from debt problems. You still have to deal with those.

Some experts advise individuals nearing retirements to postpone their retirements until they pay off all their debts. This is to make sure they will still have regular income and a source for paying dues. If postponing retirement is not an option, a retiree can still earn income by taking a part-time job, which may not be directly related to his former job.

Plan your retirement well. Aside from bolstering your retirement savings, try to eliminate all your debts. If you can?t help it, here are some logical strategies to deal with debts after retirement.

Use debt consolidation.

Debts should be paid even after you get into your retirement years. You may have stopped working and generating regular income but you are expected to continue paying your financial obligations. Retirement will not be a passport to neglect and not seriously take your debt problems.

If you still have debts to pay during or after getting retired, try debt consolidation. There are debt consolidation loans with better terms and lower interest rates. Secured loans will give you better rates and terms. As an alternative, you may use low-interest or 0% interest incentives of your credit cards? balance transfer features. Again, after using the service, try to repay the amount as quickly as you can. Some balance transfer offers only apply lower rates or 0% rates within a limited or specified period so be aware.

Pay debts with higher interest rates first.

You may opt to pay off balances or pay slightly above minimum required payments on some of your debts for the meantime. Try to pay off debts with higher interest rates first. That is because you can save more money by doing so. The high interest rate payment can be added to the payment you make to get rid of other debts.

Keep on paying diligently. Make it a goal to lower your total debt as quickly as you can. Paying little interest will help you save on costs. As you go on to repay your obligations, you may also try to tighten your financial belt by living practically and frugally. You may expect to emerge out from the debt problem in a few years.

Once you get rid of all those debts, take a breather. Try to resist the urge to obtain loans and other forms of debts again. Live within your means so as not to make your coffers run empty. Your retirement years can be enjoyed more if you will not think more about those financial obligations you owe to anyone. During retirement, it is better not to live a stressful life anymore. Enjoy your years and get past debt problems.

Andrew enjoys blogging about personal finance and especially topics such as debt consolidation and management. Over the last 4 years, Andrew has written numerous articles and has been an active contributor in personal finance forums.

Ayn Rand Followers Embrace Paul Ryan ? With Caveats | TPM2012

Ayn Rand?s famously fervent devotees are getting ready for their close-up now that fellow enthusiast Rep. Paul Ryan?s has ascended onto the GOP ticket.

Ryan has credited the novelist, who championed an ultra-small government philosophy based on ?rational egoism,? as a major influence in his life and career.

Though he has disavowed many of Rand?s social libertarian views, Ryan maintains that her work, particularly ?Atlas Shrugged,? ?triggered my interest in economics,? he told FOX News?s Brit Hume Tuesday.

Ryan told The Atlas Society, a Randian advocacy group, in 2005 that Rand?s books were ?the reason I got involved in public service.?

David Kelley, founder and ?Chief Intellectual Officer? of The Atlas Society, told TPM that he was ?pleased? to see Ryan get the VP nod even if his group, as a rule, won?t make any presidential endorsements.

?Ryan is one of many famous people, but the most prominent one now, who?s referred to Ayn Rand and brought her ideas more public attention,? he said.

?The most exciting thing is that Paul Ryan?s nomination calls attention now to the philosophy of Ayn Rand and ?Atlas Shrugged,? which has inspired so many people in public life,? said Edward Hudgins, director of advocacy for the Atlas Society and a longtime acquaintance of Ryan.

After tea party activists sparked a revival of interest in Rand in 2009, Kelley says he hopes the election season will be a new peak for the movement. He noted that the sequel to the widely panned movie adaptation of ?Atlas Shrugged? is set to be released in October.

The filmmakers, however, are a little less enthused about being injected into a political campaign. A spokesman for the production company behind ?Atlas Shrugged, Part II,? told TPM that other than a brief ?congratulatory statement,? the filmmakers and cast plan to avoid any public discussion of Ryan.

Indeed, there?s a flipside to the attention as well. Just as Democrats are tying Ryan?s hardcore budget-slashing philosophy to Romney, they?re also trying to tie Rand?s far more extreme view of government to Ryan, making the long-dead philosopher his own personal running mate.

?Somewhere in hell, Ayn Rand is cackling with glee,? Democratic strategist Paul Begala wrote in response to the Ryan selection.

The most inflammatory criticism has come from Catholic groups that claim the militantly atheist Rand led Ryan to abandon his own faith with a budget that hurts the needy. Ryan was personally harassed by a Catholic protestor last year asking him to denounce Rand?s views and embrace the Bible.

Ryan, however, has repeatedly made clear that he breaks with Rand in a number of areas, most notably her disdain for religion and her support for abortion rights.

?Those novels, I thought were interesting, but her philosophy, which is quite a bit different, is something I just don?t agree with,? Ryan told FOX Tuesday.

Critics on the left have portrayed Ryan?s attempts to distance himself from Rand as a flip flop given her paramount importance to his economic views. But Hudgins said that he has been up front about his religious objections to objectivism ever since they met as Hill staffers in the 1990s.

When Hudgins invited him to speak to the group in 2005, he recalled that Ryan replied by reminding him, ?You know, by the way, I?m a Catholic?? before agreeing to discuss her literary work.

More recently, he said Ryan complained to him about the faith-based attacks over Rand at a recent think tank event.

?He said something to the effect of, ?Everyone reads Ayn Rand!?? Hudgins said.

Kelley told TPM that he was concerned that Ryan, who he does not consider a true devotee of Rand?s philosophy, could lead to public confusion over her beliefs. In addition to his Catholicism and pro-life positions, Ryan?s budgets are still a far cry from the Randian ideal, which Kelley described as a ?radical reduction? in government that would eliminate all social welfare programs entirely.

?I?ve seen headlines like ?Ayn Rand in the White House,? which is ludicrous,? he said. ?None of these candidate are going to embody all parts of Ayn Rand?s vision.?

Still, he didn?t want to sell the vice presidential nominee short ? he said he saw Rand?s influence in Ryan?s desire ?to move the country towards more freedom for people and more self reliance.?

?I assume that?s part of Ryan?s ? and for that matter Romney?s ? interest in entitlement reform,? he said.

Retail sales rise for the first time in months

CNBC's Rick Santelli breaks down the latest numbers on retail sales and producer prices, with Beth Ann Bovino, S&P deputy chief economist.

By Reuters

U.S retail sales rose in July for the first time in four months as demand rose broadly for everything from cars to electronics, a sign that consumers could drive faster economic growth in the third quarter.

Retail sales rose 0.8 percent last month, the Commerce Department said on Tuesday.

It was the biggest gain since February and well above analysts' expectations. Economists polled by Reuters had expected retail sales to rise 0.3 percent.

The report bolsters the view that the slowdown in economic growth during the second quarter will prove temporary.

It also offers some relief for President Barack Obama, whose November re-election bid has been imperiled by a weak jobs market.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney is focusing his campaign on the weak economy that has plagued Obama's presidency.

The report could also splash a bit of water on hopes the Federal Reserve could soon launch another bond-buying program to help the economy.

Job creation in the United States slowed dramatically in the second quarter as consumer spending cooled and economic growth slowed. Job creation accelerated in July although the unemployment rate still rose to 8.3 percent.

Pointing to a strong increase in consumer spending during July, the so-called core measure of retail sales - which excludes autos, gasoline and building materials - rose 0.9 percent. That was the biggest gain since January.

Sales of motor vehicles and parts rose 0.8 percent last month. Receipts at electronics and appliance stores increased 0.9 percent. Sales of building materials gained 1.0 percent, while receipts as gasoline stations advanced 0.5 percent.

Excluding autos, sales climbed 0.8 percent.

Food industry accreditation under the spotlight at Food and Drink ...

Posted on August 14th, 2012

Business support organisation The Food and Drink Forum is teaming up with Giltbrook Workwear to run a session aimed at helping East Midlands food and drink companies get to grips with changes to one of the key food standard accreditations.

Entitled BRC Unravelled, the free event will turn the spotlight on the British Retail Consortium (BRC) accreditation, which has recently been upgraded.

It is being held at the premises of Food and Drink Forum member Giltbrook Workwear at Mercian Close, Manners Industrial Estate, Ilkeston, in Derbyshire on Wednesday September 12th between 8am and 10am.

?Many retailers and food service operators demand accreditations from their suppliers so it makes excellent business sense for manufacturers to invest in gaining the standards,? said Richard Wigley, The Food and Drink Forum?s technical manager.

?This event will look at the recent changes to BRC, how to achieve and maintain BRC the smart way, and will illustrate how BRC can help companies to save money.?

The breakfast meeting, which is open to members and non-members of The Food and Drink Forum, will also look at SALSA ? the Safe and Local Supplier Approval certification scheme aimed at micro-sized producers.

As part of the session, delegates will hear about companies who have successfully achieved BRC and other accreditations, and how it has benefited their business.

Its aims include championing the food and drink sector in the East Midlands, developing strategic influencing partnerships within and outside the East Midlands, and acting as a centre for information and knowledge on all subjects relating to the food and drink sector in the region.

It also aims to stimulate and facilitate sustainable change within companies of all sizes across the food chain, generate income and secure resources to meet the needs of a high-quality service, and promote the food and drink sector to future employees through education and the raising of skills.

Life is always changing with the advancement of technology. People are now less worried about their health. Minerals play a crucial role in maintaining our health. Their functions include many, like formation of blood and bones, component of body fluids and are responsible for all metabolic processes in our body. Movie review: 'Watch' out for hit-or-miss laughs | UWIRE

Posted on06 August 2012.

Collaboration of colossal comedic talents can be a fun box office draw. But, occasionally, the resulting film can feel lazy, phoned in and half baked. ?The Watch? is one such film.

After invading a Costco, a group of aliens looks to take over the world, starting with suburban Ohio. Evan (Ben Stiller), an over-active go-getter, community organizer and Costco manager decides to form a neighborhood watch, but the fun-loving Bob (Vince Vaughn), the troubled, failed cop Franklin (Jonah Hill), and the awkward Jamarcus (Richard Ayoade) are the only men who step up to the job.

Boasting the likes of Stiller, Vaughn and Hill, ?The Watch? looked to be a fun riff on sci-fi home invasions. While the actors look to be having fun, with Vaughn spewing out his manic ramblings and Stiller returning to Greg Focker territory, ?The Watch? lacks inspiration.

Instead of splitting your side, ?The Watch? wields a dull knife. It is almost immediately forgettable with no significant payoff. Most of the best comedic sequences are spoiled in the trailer. The rest of the jokes rely on references to male genitalia.

This is not altogether surprising, however, given that ?The Watch? comes from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the writing team behind ?Superbad.? Like Rogen?s own comedy, most of the asides and references in ?The Watch? feel unsure and insecure.

?The Watch? had an opportunity to set itself apart. I could have been a comment on American masculinity, consumerism or suburbia, but these ideas are only fleeting references. In addition, R. Lee Emery and Rosemarie DeWitt are woefully underused. Emery is an immediately recognizable character actor (the drill sergeant from ?Full Metal Jacket?). But he?s only given one scene. Who would not have loved to seem him waste aliens while rattling off gruff one-liners. Likewise, DeWitt is a funny and talented actress, but is isolated in the supportive wife role here. She briefly takes up a gun and joins the guys, but quickly fades into the background.

Hill and Vaughn are fun to watch, but most of the film?s supporting cast and plot turns are lacking any imagination. Similarly, Akiva Schaffer of SNL?s Loney Island fame fails to add any zest to the film?s direction, which just goes to prove that ?The Watch? was better left as a short comedy sketch.

Zynga launches 'ChefVille' amid accusations of copycatting

2 hrs.

Facebook gaming giant Zynga is about to launch?the latest in its ongoing series of?"Ville"?games. It's called "ChefVille" and as the name implies, the game puts Facebook?players in the shoes of a chef trying to create and run a successful restaurant.

But this week's?launch of "ChefVille"?comes at a dark time for Zynga. The company is facing multiple lawsuits -- two?accusing the top brass?of insider trading and a third accusing the company?of blatantly copying another company's game. Specifically, Electronic Arts is accusing Zynga of?copyright infringement, alleging that Zynga's brand new "The Ville" rips off EA's game?"The?Sims Social."

When it comes to these accusations of copycatting, the launch of "ChefVille" highlights an interesting question:?What's the difference between copyright infringing copycatting and good-ol' game development?evolution??

It's a murky area for sure.?For its part,?Zynga has been frequently accused of borrowing?heavily from a?whole host of games.

Way back in the company's?early days, the creator of "Mob Wars" sued Zynga for copyright infringement?after it launched the surprisingly similar Facebook game "Mafia Wars." The case was settled and the maker of "Mob Wars" walked away with about $7?million.?Then, when Zynga launched its?massively?popular game "FarmVille," critics couldn't help but notice that it seemed like "almost an exact duplicate" of a game called "Farm Town."?

More recently, the three-person mobile game development team at NimbleBit accused Zynga of ripping off their hit iPhone game "Tiny Tower" with the launch of "Dream Heights." NimbleBit?even posted side-by-side?screenshots showing the similarities between the two games.

And many of us who follow gaming?couldn't help but notice the similarities between Zynga's recently launched match-three game?"Ruby Blast" and PopCap's "Bejeweled Blitz" -- or more specifically,?the?Diamond Mine mode in "Bejeweled 3."

As for?"ChefVille," it does seem remarkably?similar to another game --?Zynga's own restaurant-simulation game?"Cafe World" (first launched back in 2009). But if?you want to go back even farther, months?before Zynga launched?"Cafe World," there was a similar?game called?"Restaurant City" -- created by Playfish ...?who is now owned by (guess who!) Electronic Arts. And many game critics couldn't help but?notice those?similarities, too.

But well before ?there was?"Restaurant City" there was the?restaurant-themed time management game?"Diner Dash" and as far as cooking games go, there was?"Cooking Mama."?

So?while some sling about words like "cloning" or "ripoff"?-- others use words like "evolution" and "iteration." That is, on?the flip side of things, game developers almost always learn from the games that have come before. For example, plenty of developers have taken, say, PopCap's famed match-three "Bejeweled" gameplay, tweaked it and come up?with their own game. That's how we ended up with the?superb role-playing match-three?game "Puzzle Quest."

Meanwhile,?one can't help but look at any one?of the new?first-person shooting games and crank out a list of similarities to first-person shooting games that have come before.

When it comes to "ChefVille,"?Zynga believes it has taken an older concept, improved upon it and made it fresh again.?"I think ChefVille represents a huge evolution?in the restaurant genre," studio general manager?Jonathan Knight told me recently during an advance look at the company's newest game.

Not only does "ChefVille" boast some of the highest?production values you'll find in a Facebook game, he says, but they've baked in some unique gameplay elements.

The basics of the game are this: you create your dream?restaurant, designing the?layout and decor as well as the menu.?French bistro,?Italian cafe, American-style eatery ... it's up to you. And as you progress, you unlock new cuisines, cookware, crafting stations, ingredients and?recipes.

But what makes this game unique is the multiple ways you can acquire ingredients, Knight says. You not only find different ingredients in the game as you play and unlock the board, but?you can borrow them from your Facebook friends and you can?"craft" different ingredients?by combining other ingredients you've acquired.

Need dough for pizza? Cook it up using the ingredients you've pulled together.?Need meat for a burger? Visit your friend's restaurant and they'll gift?it to you.

"The ingredient game is really the heart of the game," Knight says. "It?s what makes it the most social cooking game."

Meanwhile, Zynga has added a real-world element to the game. That is, as you play, recipes are emailed to you so you can use your real kitchen?to?cook up dishes that?you've dished out in the game world.

Here's a look at the "ChefVille" trailer for some of the highlights:

"ChefVille" is due to launch on Facebook "sometime this week." When it does, you'll be able to find it right here.

Will "ChefVille"?stand out as a unique offering on a familiar genre ... or will it feel like yet another all-too-familiar "Ville" game? Only time will tell.?

For his part,?Knight makes this promise, "This is the?definitive?game made about food.?It?s a social game that?s going to last for a long time."

Winda Benedetti?writes?about video?games for NBC?News. You can follow her tweets about games and other things?on Twitter?here?@WindaBenedetti?and you can?follow her?on?Google+.?Meanwhile, be sure to check?out the?IN-GAME?FACEBOOK PAGE?to discuss the day's?gaming news and reviews.

Tips To Improve Your Understanding Of Personal Finance And Its ...

Shop around before committing to a specific lender for financing. Talk to several loan officers, and always get terms on paper. You can also let the loan officer know of other rates you have been quoted, giving them a chance to compete for your business. Be sure to not only compare interest rates, but additional fees and charges as well.

Do more than just start a rainy day account to improve your personal financial situation define exactly what a rainy day means to you. If you put emphasis on the savings account and realize that you?re putting the money back for only emergencies, you can handle it a lot better than simply treating it like an everyday in-case-I-need-it account.

If you have good mechanical skills, you can make some extra money by offering services to neighbors, friends and family. You could offer oil changes or any other service that you are capable of and for a reasonable price, you can supplement your income and may even enable you to be your own boss.

When it comes to saving money, it is not just about paying yourself first and sticking to a budget that you need to focus on. Cut corners whenever possible, and pinch those pennies! Don?t be a tightwad, but make sure that you are making financially responsible decisions and helping yourself, whenever you can.

You can save money by finding cheap activities for your kids. Many parents think that the only way to please their children is to take them to expensive places. This is just not necessary. Bring them to the library for storytelling or take them to the park and let them play ball.

A great personal-finance tip is to hold on to your clothes as long as possible. You don?t need to go out and buy a completely new wardrobe every single year to look and stay fashionable. Part of fashion is coming up with your own ideas, and you can definitely do that with older clothes.

Making your money stretch is important when dealing with personal financial issues. One way in which you can work to save money is to start looking at used items instead of new items. If that stove breaks, check out a place like Craigslist for some deals on quality items. You can save upwards of 80%.

To keep your finances under control, you should stop worrying about fads and current styles. Keeping up on fashion is very expensive and really, only benefits manufacturers. Keep that hard earned money for yourself by only purchasing classic pieces from time to time, as your clothes wear out. This can leave you with thousands of dollars saved each year.

Taking a loan is usually not a smart decision for your finances. You should look for other solutions before you borrow money from a financial institution. Perhaps you can use your savings, wait before you purchase what you need or borrow money from your friends or family. If you decide to take a loan, compare different options to find the best interest rate.

Enlist the help of a friend to cut the fat from your spending. Let a trusted friend or family member look at your budget and spending habits. Sometimes the unbiased eye of another person will bring to light an area in which you can but back or are overspending.

If at all possible, pay off your credit card balances in full. Only put as much as you can pay off on the credit card each month. It will show that you are a responsible borrower and it will increase your credit rating as well as make it easier to take out lines of credit in the future.

Sometimes your credit score may be penalized by shutting down all of your credit card accounts at once. You can continue to pay on all of your accounts, but consider carrying only one or two cards in your purse or wallet at any time. You will be forced to carefully choose your credit purchases and avoid temptation.

As you can see, it is never too early to teach your children about finances and budgeting. Children of all ages are ready to absorb the money information you are ready to teach and the sooner they learn it, they better off they will be. This information will be invaluable, as they enter and travel through adulthood.

British women bow out of Olympic football

Great Britain's women saw their maiden Olympic football tournament end with a 2-0 quarter-final defeat by Canada in Coventry.

Just days after beating Brazil in front of a raucous crowd of more than 70,000 -- a British record for a women's match -- at Wembley Stadium, they were unable to reach the same heights against a Canada side coached by Englishman John Herdman.

Jonelle Filigno gave Canada an early lead before Christine Sinclair doubled their advantage before half-time with a curling free-kick.

Canada's win set up a semi-final clash with neighbours and reigning Olympic champions the United States at Manchester United's Old Trafford on Monday.

Britain's Jill Scott while disappointed with the defeat said the experience of competing at an Olympics would remain with her for ever

"I have loved every moment. I will look back in years to come at what has been a very special time in my life."

In the group stages, GB enjoyed their finest result in their brief history as a women's football nation when qualified for the last eight by beating female soccer superpower Brazil 1-0.

Stephanie Houghton maintained her record of scoring in all the team's Olympic matches as she rounded goalkeeper Andreia in the second minute at Wembley for what turned out to be the game's only goal.

"To play in front of 70,000 people, you couldn't dream of a better day," Hougton said afterwards.

(AP) ? Former Republican U.S. Sen. Larry Craig aims to fend off a federal election lawsuit against him by arguing his infamous June 11, 2007, Minneapolis airport bathroom visit that ended in his sex-sting arrest was part of his official Senate business.

Craig is hoping to avoid repaying $217,000 in campaign funds the Federal Election Commission claims he misused to defend himself.

The FEC sued Craig in June in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., alleging he converted the campaign money to personal use by spending it on his legal defense after he was accused of soliciting sex in a Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport bathroom. The commission argues Craig's defense had no connection to his campaign for federal office.

Craig counters that money tied to his airport bathroom trip was for neither personal use nor his campaign, but fell under his official, reimbursable duties as senator because he was traveling between Idaho and the nation's capital for work.

He cites a U.S. Senate rule in which reimbursable per diem expenses include all charges for meals, lodging, hotel fans, cleaning, pressing of clothing ? and bathrooms.

"Not only was the trip itself constitutionally required, but Senate rules sanction reimbursement for any cost relating to a senator's use of a bathroom while on official travel," wrote Andrew Herman, Craig's lawyer in Washington, D.C., in documents filed Thursday.

In its complaint, the FEC contends the three-term U.S. senator's campaign account, Craig for U.S. Senate, paid at least $139,952 to the law firm Sutherland, Asbill and Brennan in Washington, D.C., and $77,032 to Kelly & Jacobson in Minnesota for legal services related to his guilty plea to disorderly conduct.

An undercover officer said Craig tapped his feet and signaled under a stall divider that he wanted sex.

Regulators voted unanimously in May to pursue the complaint against Craig after informal negotiations failed. They are seeking repayment of the money, as well as fines of up to $6,500 from the former senator and his treasurer, Kaye O'Riordan.

Contacted Friday, FEC spokeswoman Judith Ingram cited pending litigation and declined to comment on the case.

Craig didn't return a phone call Friday to his lobbying firm, New West Strategies.

In documents supporting his bid to have the complaint dismissed, Craig cites the case of former U.S. Rep. Jim Kolbe of Arizona, who tapped campaign money in 2006 to defend himself after allegations of improper behavior emerged against him following a Grand Canyon rafting trip with two former male pages.

The trip by Kolbe, the second openly gay Republican to serve in Congress, was an official visit with support provided by the National Park Service.

The FEC concluded that Kolbe's use of the campaign money to pay legal expenses associated with a Department of Justice inquiry regarding the trip were "ordinary and necessary expenses incurred in connection with his duty as a House member."

Craig's lawyer argues that his airport bathroom visit, made while traveling back to Washington, D.C., from his home state, should be seen similarly ? and the FEC complaint dismissed with prejudice.

"Simply put, no principled distinction can be drawn between the Kolbe matter and this case," Herman contends. "Sen. Craig's legal expenses arose during official Senate travel, an activity that was part of his constitutionally enumerated duties as a holder of federal office."

Mongolian court jails ex-president for corruption

A court in Mongolia has jailed former president Nambar Enkhbayar for four years after finding him guilty of corruption, charges that he has called politically motivated.

Enkhbayar, 54, served as prime minister and then president for almost a decade until losing office in 2009. He was arrested in April in a dawn raid broadcast live on national television.

On Thursday, a Mongolian court found him guilty of misappropriating gifts intended for a monastery, along with other corruption charges, in a hearing broadcast to the nation.

The court originally sentenced him to seven years, but reduced it by three years, citing an amnesty law.

Enkhbayar, who was barred from running in Mongolia's June parliamentary elections, called the charges "groundless".

"I served the posts of president, prime minister and speaker of parliament. I never thought I would be accused groundlessly," Enkhbayar said in his testimony. His lawyer said they would appeal the verdict.

Enkhbayar formed a breakaway Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party last year, splitting from the ruling Mongolian People's Party (MPP), the oldest in the country which held power during the Soviet era.

For much of the past decade the MPP shared power with the Democratic Party, but the latter left the coalition in January to prepare for June elections.

Both parties have pledged to improve the distribution of wealth across the vast nation, which covers an area three times the size of France but has a population of just 2.8 million people.

Mongolia is ranked 120 out of 182 countries on the Corruption Perceptions Index compiled by the watchdog group Transparency International, tying with Bangladesh, Iran and Kazakhstan.

Mongolia is one of Asia's poorest nations but has increasingly lured foreign investors with its rich deposits of copper, gold, uranium, silver and oil.

Its economy grew 17.3 percent last year and foreign investment quadrupled to $5 billion.

But poorer Mongolians complain the benefits of the boom are not reaching them, that the elites have grown more corrupt and foreign mining companies receive exceedingly favourable deals.

How the Antarctic Icefish Lost Its Red Blood Cells But Survived Anyway

An icefish larva (Credit: Uwe kils, Wikimedia Commons)

In 1928, a biologist named Ditlef Rustad caught an unusual fish off the coast of Bouvet Island in the Antarctic. The ?white crocodile fish,? as Rustad named it, had large eyes, a long toothed snout and diaphanous fins stretched across fans of slender quills. It was scaleless and eerily pale, as white as snow in some parts, nearly translucent in others. When Rustad cut the fish open, he discovered that its blood, too, was colorless?not a drop of red anywhere. The crocodile fish?s gills looked odd as well: they were soft and white, like vanilla yogurt; in contrast, a cod?s gills are as dark as wine, soaked in oxygenated blood.

Later, Johan Ruud and other researchers confirmed that the Antarctic icefishes, as they are now known, are the only vertebrates that lack both red blood cells and hemoglobin?the iron-rich protein such cells use to bind and ferry oxygen through the circulatory system from heart to lungs to tissues and back again. At first blush, biologists regarded icefishes? pallor blood as a remarkable adaptation to the Antarctic?s freezing, oxygen-rich waters. Perhaps icefishes absorbed so much dissolved oxygen from the ocean through their gills and ultra thin skin that they could abandon those big, spongy red blood cells. After all, the biologists reasoned, thinner blood requires less effort to circulate around the body and saving energy is always an advantage, especially when you are trying to survive in an extreme environment.

More recently, however, some biologists have proposed that the loss of hemoglobin was not a beneficial adaptation, but rather a genetic accident with unfortunate consequences. Since icefish blood can only transport 10 percent as much oxygen as typical fish blood, icefishes were forced to dramatically alter their bodies in order to survive. In this scenario, despite an evolutionary blunder that would be lethal to most fish, the icefishes? grit?as well as a little ecological serendipity?rescued them from their own bad blood. Scientists continue to revise icefishes? evolutionary history as new evidence surfaces, but their story is surely one of the most unique and bizarre in the animal kingdom.

Icefishes live in the Southern Ocean, which encircles Antarctica. Rotating currents essentially isolate these waters from the world?s warmer seas, keeping temperatures low: temperatures near the Antarctic Peninsula, the northernmost part of the mainland, range from about 1.5 degrees Celsius in the summer to ?1.8 degrees Celsius in the winter. Many fish in the Southern Ocean, including icefishes, produce antifreeze proteins to prevent ice crystals from forming in their blood when ocean temperatures drop below the freezing point of fresh water. Sixteen species of Antarctic icefishes comprise the family Channichthyidae, which falls under the larger suborder Notothenioidei. Among the hundreds of red-blooded Notothenioid species, only the icefishes lack hemoglobin. Together, the Notothenioids and icefishes dominate the waters they call home, accounting for approximately 35 percent of fish species and 90 percent of fish biomass in the Southern Ocean.

A Blackfin Icefish (Credit: Bill Baker)

By comparing icefish DNA to the DNA of red-blooded fish, William Detrich of Northeastern University and his colleagues identified the specific genetic mutations responsible for the loss of hemoglobin. Basically, one of the genes essential for the assembly of the hemoglobin protein is completely garbled in icefishes. Although no other animal completely lacks red blood cells, biologists have observed a diminishing of red blood cells in response to a changing environment. When it gets cold, it?s advantageous for fish to make their blood a little thinner and easier to circulate. Fish that live in cold waters usually have a smaller percentage of red blood cells in their blood than fish that live in warmer waters. And fish in temperate regions decrease the percentage of red blood cells in their blood each winter to save energy. Relying on these facts, some biologists assumed that Antarctic icefish evolved incredibly thin blood as an adaptation to the Southern Ocean.

Kristin O?Brien of the University of Alaska Fairbanks and her colleague Bruce Sidell (who is now sadly deceased) decided to test this assumption. In a paper titled ?When bad things happen to good fish,? O?Brien and Sidell first point out that, compared to their cousins the Notothenioids and other similarly sized fish, icefishes have larger hearts and blood vessels. Although icefishes pump unusually thin blood through their bodies, their circulatory systems handle huge volumes. O?Brien and Sidell calculated that icefishes expend approximately twice as much energy as red-blooded Notothenioids moving all that extra blood. Whereas fish in temperate zones devote no more than five percent of their resting metabolic rate to their hearts, icefishes invest a whopping 22 percent of their body?s available energy in their giant tickers.* O?Brien and Sidell also show that icefish have more blood vessels nourishing certain organs than red-blooded fish. If you peel back the outer layers of a typical fish?s eye and fill the blood vessels with yellow silicone rubber, you will see a web of neatly segregated vessels tracing the contour of the eye like the ribs of a pumpkin. Do the same to an icefish?s eye and you will find a dense, tangled mess like a plate of spaghetti.

Like other biologists in recent years, O?Brien and Sidell view the icefishes? large hearts and capillaries, high blood volume and dense nets of blood vessels as compensations for the loss of hemoglobin. But these adaptations alone might not have been enough to save icefishes from extinction?they likely benefited from fortuitous circumstances as well. Around 25 million years ago, the Southern Ocean flowing around Antarctica?which had broken away from other continents?began to cool. Not only did the colder water offer more oxygen, it also killed many species that did not evolve antifreeze proteins or otherwise adapt to the cold, creating a frigid sanctuary that the icefishes and their relatives have dominated ever since.

A crocodile icefish (Credit: Marrabbio2, Wikimedia Commons)

Today, however, icefishes face a new threat: manmade climate change. The Southern Ocean is getting warmer and possibly more acidic and less nutritious. O?Brien says researchers have shown that adult icefishes are more sensitive to changes in temperature than red-blooded fish?they cannot stand the heat. If Ruud was right?that ?only in the cold water of the polar regions could a fish survive that has lost its pigment??then the ongoing changes to the Southern Ocean might be the icefishes? undoing. Consider this version of their story: icefishes evolved to survive sub-freezing temperatures in one of the most extreme environments on Earth, only to lose their red blood cells to a genetic accident; despite the mishap, they kept swimming, expanding their hearts and growing more blood vessels to get enough oxygen around their bodies; now, people are turning the Southern Ocean into a habitat for which icefishes are completely unsuited, forcing them to adapt once again or perish. Personally, I?m clinging to the hope that even if icefishes do not have any hemoglobin in their blood, they have plenty of resilience coursing through their veins.

Reese Witherspoon Takes Rob Pattinson In?

Now that Robert Pattinson is slogging around California with his head held down, everyone wants to know what he is going to do? For now, some people think Reese Witherspoon is letting him stay at her ranch in Ojai. And, what about Kristen? This is getting sadder by the minute. After Kristen Stewart made the dumb mistake of flat out admitting to the tryst with her creepy fling Rupert Sanders, it’s starting to get bad. First there was a UHaul leaving the house they share together. Then R-Patz reportedly called out this Sanders guy for a man-to-man talk. Now it seems like all Rob wants to do is keep his face out of the public eye, and especially the camera lenses of the paps. Some sources say that his Water For Elephants co-star is taking him in. So far it’s being denied… Witherspoon’s reps won’t comment, but the claim is being denied by some pretty trustworthy sources. I kind of like the idea. She was cheated on before and knows how it feels to be humiliated. If she wasn’t super pregnant and happy with her man Jim Toth, I would be rooting for them to get together. We’ll have to [...]

Goldrush emerged on the scene after guitarist and vocalist, Prabir Mehta's, previous band, Prabir and the Substitutes disbanded in early 2009. The group had been working on new songs and Prabir had reached out to double bassist, Matt Gold, and violinist, Treesa Gold, two classically trained strings performers at the Richmond Symphony, to play on some of their tracks. When The Substitutes broke up, the Gold's and Mehta still wanted to take a crack at a release together. This led to their self-released EP, We Don't Have to Worry. Goldrush's upcoming release for the Making Moves series, which is supported in part by the Kal & Lucille Rudman Institute for Entertainment Industry Studies at Drexel University, will consist of three new unique tracks from the Richmond Virginia band. Matt Taylor bassist of Motion City Soundtrack produced the tracks along with Drexel's Music Industry Program alumnus, Dave Petit and Lenny Skolnik engineering the sessions.? The 7" was then handed over to Phil Nicolo (John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, The Police) for his expert mixing. Goldrushs' Making Moves release opens with "Settle Down", an infectious and grooving track, with a slinky hook that builds with a captivating fervor.? The up-tempo indie pop track "REX" hits with aggressive strings and Mehta's playful lyricism urging an escape from his long-standing reality. The bonus track on the digital release, "The Dream is Over", brings a dark twist to the mix with intricate string runs and a heavy drum and bass line that will haunt and delight. Matt Taylor states, "It's a funny story. I was cleaning my house with iTunes blaring on shuffle. A song that I didn't recognize came on. It sounded like Jon Spencer Blues Explosion with bits of Elvis Costello, Soul Coughing, Led Zeppelin, with two classical instruments thrown in. It blew my mind so I checked to see what it was. Of course it was labeled Track 01 and there was no band name. I remembered that from time to time my friend Kevin would send me songs that he had recorded, so I took a shot in the dark and asked him who it was. The song in question ended up being "Touch" by a band called Goldrush that he had recorded months earlier. I had never heard them until that moment when they shuffled their way into my life. I immediately did some research on the band and found out that they were playing a show. I went to see them and was blown away. I knew then that I had to work with them in some fashion. When the Making Moves series came about, Goldrush was my only choice." Goldrush has shared the stage with the likes of The Head and The Heart, Dr. Dog, Hotel Lights, Trampled By Turtles, Ted Leo, Motion City Soundtrack, Cracker, Girltalk, Best Coast, J Roddy Waltson and The Business and was a featured performer at the 2012 SXSW Music Festival as well as performed a live score during the silent film Battleship Potemkin at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.? Goldrush will be touring the US during Summer 2012 to support the August 28th release of Making Moves on 7-inch vinyl and digital download.
