home improvement | kitchen and bathroom quick fix tips

Your kitchen and bathroom need to work hard for you and it doesn?t take long for them to start showing signs of wear. It can be discouraging to start and end your day in a sad and dated kitchen or bathroom but don?t lose hope. Even if you don?t have the time, desire or budget to for a complete demolition and renovation, these quick fix tips for simple home improvements will bring new life to your kitchen or bathroom.

Walls
In most bathrooms and kitchens your cabinets, appliances and fittings cover up most of the wall space, but don?t underestimate the effect that changing up your wall color or adding pattern can have. When choosing a new wall color, take into account the permanent elements that you aren?t able to change. The right color on the walls can help camouflage the ugly tile color or countertop.

If you decided to go with wallpaper, choose one that has been designed for kitchen and bath applications. It should be easy to clean and withstand humidity and temperature fluctuations. Wallpaper is a great way to add pattern, texture and color to your space.

A kitchen backsplash is the wall area that runs between the counter and upper cabinets and behind the sink and stove. In the bathroom it is the area above the counter, behind the sink. This is a perfect, usually small, area to create a focal point that draws your eye to it instead of staying stuck on the elements in the space that you find less desirable. Backsplashes are typically done in tile but you can use other materials such as glass, mirror or pressed tin if they suit the style of your room.

Cabinets
Outdated, damaged or unpleasant cabinets in either the kitchen or bathroom can affect the entire room since they are such a large-scale element. Of all the possible fixes, making changes to your cabinets can have the largest visible impact.

The simplest option is to paint the cabinets and change the hardware. Be sure to remove the doors, handles, hinges, clean the surfaces thoroughly to remove the grime and grease from years of use, then sand, prime and paint.

Alternatively, you can have your cabinets refaced for a more professional and longer lasting solution.

Fittings and Fixtures
Certain fixtures like taps, faucets and lighting can be replaced easily and at fairly limited costs. The right lighting can enhance any room, particularly small dark spaces.

Larger fittings like tubs, tiles, sinks and countertops are more difficult and expensive to replace. For these elements, calling in a bathtub refinishing or countertop refinishing expert is your best bet. Refinishing can repair cracks and scratches, change the color and texture of the surface and make your fittings look like new.

With a few quick fixes and some new accessories, your kitchen or bathroom can look like new in no time, without breaking the bank.
